Valentino Liberato
Background
Valentino Liberato was born on February 1, 1944, in Wichatovington, Iowa, to the Liberato family, who immigrated from Italy in the early 1910s. He learned the craft of pizza making from his father Mario, who ran a small neighborhood italian restaurant called Dall'Italia con Gusto. Valentino worked alongside him from a young age, learning the value of hard work, discipline, and respect for tradition. In 1970 he took over the family business and renamed it Da Pizza Bar and Restaurant. Under his leadership the restaurant became a community staple, known for its time‑honored recipes, fresh ingredients, and hands‑on approach. Despite his success, Valentino remains humble and deeply involved in day‑to‑day operations.
Recently though, Valentino has grown concerned about the restaurant’s future. He is fast approaching retirement age, and without a son to inherit the business he has been training his daughter Ribelle to succeed him. The issue is that he worries she may not want to continue the family tradition. He loves his family and the restaurant dearly, and fears that without a committed successor or a clear succession plan the business may struggle over the long term.
Goals
- Retire with financial security while ensuring Da Pizza Bar and Restaurant’s legacy endures.
- Mentor and prepare Ribelle (or another capable successor) to manage the restaurant.
- Preserve the restaurant’s reputation for quality and tradition amid a changing food landscape.
- Adopt measured adaptations—marketing, operations, or selective menu updates—that respect core values.
- Implement a succession and financial plan to secure the restaurant for future generations.
